Keys, Camelot and confidence
How do I find the key of a song?
Drop the file above. Resonade decodes the audio on your own device, sends a short mono analysis version to the server, and reads its harmonic fingerprint: which of the twelve pitch classes carry the energy, and how they stack up against major and minor key profiles. You get the best match with a confidence score, the tempo in BPM and the Camelot code, usually within seconds. No account, no credits, no watermark.
What is a Camelot code, and why do DJs care?
The Camelot wheel numbers the 24 keys from 1 to 12, with A for minor and B for major: A minor is 8A, C major is 8B. Neighbours on the wheel share almost all of their notes, so staying on the same number, or moving a single step, keeps two tracks from clashing. That is harmonic mixing. It works in the studio too: a sample in 9A (E minor) sits naturally over a bassline in 8A or 10A.
How accurate is the key detection?
Honest answer: it depends on the source. Clear tonal material, a piano loop, a melodic topline, a full mix with a steady progression, usually lands right with high confidence. Dense polyphonic mixes, heavily detuned synths and songs that change key halfway are harder, which is exactly why the result carries a confidence score instead of pretending certainty. The classic edge case is relative keys: A minor and C major share the same seven notes, so when confidence is low, try both.
Can I turn the song into MIDI too?
That is the step after the free one. The key finder already shows the audio-to-MIDI conversion it heard as a playable piano-roll. Create a free account and Resonade composes eight original MIDI takes in the same vibe as your track, in its detected key, each downloadable as a standard .mid file for FL Studio, Ableton Live, Logic Pro and every other DAW. Your first 3 tracks are free, no card needed.
Is my audio uploaded or stored anywhere?
Your file is decoded on your own device; only a short mono analysis version reaches our server, where it is read in memory and deleted the moment the analysis finishes. Nothing is stored, nothing is shared, and nothing you upload ever trains a model.
